about

It was an excited Terry Brown who called in the evening sometime in March of 2007 to say he and Alex Lifeson had spent an enjoyable and productive 12 hours in Alex's studio piling on guitars for this song. Besides enjoying each other's company for the first time in a while Alex really liked the song and spared no creative effort experimenting and having fun.

We too were excited (an understatement, for sure), and as we looked ahead toward releasing our "Fly Paper" album it made sense to leverage Alex's participation and release a video for an edited version of "Sacred & Mundane" for promotion. Our budget was limited but good buddy Mat Kennedy made the most of our setup in Jeff Whittle's garage. Nowadays people just do a lyric or visualizer video to get songs on YT. Anyway, the video did get played on various independent music channels. Lip-syncing sure is tough though!

The release of "Fly Paper" suffered a bit in the coordination department with Inside Out recently being bought by SPV - and the closure of Inside Out America, with whose staff we enjoyed an established relationship. The good people at SPV in the U.S. didn't know quite what to make of us and the album didn't do as well as "Window Dressing." Unfortunately, on both sides of the pond, there was hesitation on just how much we could "promote" Alex's involvement. Atlantic Records was clear we couldn't do something like put a sticker on the cover. Of course, we wished to comply with the terms and conditions, but it seemed like our label went a bit too far and we could barely mention Alex.

"Fly Paper" did ultimately prove popular with Tiles fans - limited coat-tailing on Alex's marquee value notwithstanding - it's a great privilege to have him add his magic to our song.

Available for the first time outside of YouTube here's the single edit of "Sacred & Mundane."

lyrics

Sacred & Mundane
Lyrics: Herin

Evaporate
Drop by drop
Sinking inch by inch
Feel the ebb and flow
As momentum slows

Accumulate
One by one
Changing bit by bit
Ivory tower test
Entertains the guest

Hidden in the space between the words
Another dialect to learn
An ounce prevents a pound of cure
Sacred and mundane

Articulate
Word by word
Standing face to face
Bridges burning still
In a test of wills

Manipulate
Step by step
Twisting day by day
Addicted to the fight
Words as sharp as knives

I see blue washing into orange and red
Fanning sparks to flame
Details multiply
Never twice the same

Assimilate
Choice by choice
Shrinking lie by lie
False identity
Keeping you from me
